Some problem in tha paper-based TOEFL* reading comprehension section ask about the author's purpose. This unit discusses the common purposes conveyed by authors in the TOEFL reading passages :
- To Compare ( by pointing out similarities and differences ),
- To Explain,
- To Describe,
- To Give Reasons,
- To Provide examples.
To know the author's purpose in writing a specific sentence or pharase, look for particular, words expressing intent such on the contary, on the other hand, similiary, like wise, because, for example, for instance, etc. Within the sentence or pharase .To understand the author's purpose in writing the paragraph or pasage, try to identify the main idea and the supporting details.
STRATEGIES : - To Determine the author's purpose in writing a sentence or pharase :
- Find particular waord expressing intent such as the contary, on the other hand, similarly, likewise, because, for example, for instance, etc.
- Try to understand the meaning conveyed by these words.
- Conclude what the author's purpose is in writing the pharse or sentence.
- To determine the author's purpose in writing a paragraph or pasage :
- Look for the main idea of the paragraph or passage.
- Read the supporting details carefully.
- Pay attention to the above word expressing intent.
- Draw conclusion about the author's purpose.
